What This Design Does:

A source-traceable engineering memory system designed to preserve and retrieve institutional knowledge from GitLab repositories and merge-request discussions. The system uses context engineering to extract, classify, and store architectural decisions, technical constraints, known issues, and implementation rationale. By providing AI coding agents such as Claude Code with relevant historical context before code generation, the system aims to reduce repeated mistakes, prevent conflicting implementations, and address knowledge attrition across development teams. The architecture consists of GitLab ingestion workers, a memory retrieval API, and PostgreSQL with pgvector for persistent storage and semantic search. Deployed on Kubernetes, the system supports scalable knowledge ingestion and contextual retrieval.

Caveats and Consideration:

Knowledge accuracy: Extracted engineering decisions may be outdated, superseded, or context-specific. Source references, timestamps, and conflict detection are necessary to prevent agents from relying on invalid information. Security and access control: GitLab repository permissions must be respected during ingestion and retrieval. Sensitive source code, credentials, and confidential discussions must not be exposed to unauthorized users or AI agents. Context relevance: Excessive or irrelevant retrieved information can increase token usage and reduce AI coding agent effectiveness. Retrieval should prioritize relevance, recency, and source credibility. Knowledge traceability: Every stored memory should retain links to its original GitLab merge request, discussion, or commit to support verification and auditing. Integration limitations: AI coding agents require an integration mechanism, such as an MCP server or API, to retrieve engineering memory automatically. The Kubernetes infrastructure alone does not provide this capability. Operational considerations: PostgreSQL persistence, backup strategies, ingestion retries, deduplication, monitoring, and embedding model costs must be considered for production deployment. Evaluation: The system's effectiveness should be validated through measurable improvements in context retrieval accuracy, reduction in repeated implementation mistakes, and AI-generated code quality.
